Dear Customers,
on 12 August 2026, the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will come into force. This will introduce new requirements across Europe regarding packaging and its placing on the market.
As a distributor, we have made extensive use of the past few months to make the necessary preparations, drawing on legal advice and working closely with our suppliers. Our aim is to continue providing you with legally compliant, transparent and documented solutions that meet sustainability standards.
What will apply from 12 August 2026?
The requirements that will apply immediately include, in particular:
- Compliance with statutory limits on hazardous substances
- Availability of relevant supplier declarations or declarations of conformity
- Maintenance of records regarding relevant substance restrictions, for example concerning PFAS and heavy metals
- Documentation of existing reuse systems, where applicable
Important note regarding Declarations of conformity and Technical documentations
Grönheit & Weigel GmbH holds the relevant Declarations of conformity and Technical documentations from the respective suppliers. These documents are archived by us in an audit-proof manner and, in accordance with existing contractual agreements designed to protect supplier confidentiality, the originals are not passed on to customers.
Declarations of conformity and Technical documentations are primarily intended to be submitted to market surveillance authorities upon justified request.
Which PPWR requirements are not yet in force?
Some key provisions of the PPWR will only become binding in the coming years:
- From 12 August 2028: Standardised material labelling using harmonised pictograms
- From 12 August 2029: Labelling requirements for reusable packaging
- From 1 January 2030: Classification of recyclability and mandatory recycled content quotas for affected packaging
Some of these requirements are still being further defined through supplementary legislation and technical guidelines from the European Union.
