Load securing of IBC containers

Day by day, large volumes of goods are transported by land, by sea and in the air.

During transport, the loaded goods are exposed to different kinds of stresses (e.g. mechanical or climatic stresses).

The load securing has to withstand these forces.

Proper load securing is an important contribution to the avoidance of accidents and damage of goods. There are a large number of guidelines and legal provisions on the safe transport of goods.

IBC containers

The Intermediate Bulk Container, abbreviated IBC, is used for the transport of liquid and free-flowing substances.

The advantage of IBCs towards barrels is obvious: Four steel drums of 200 liters each need the same space as one IBC of 1.000 liters.

An IBC container is a transport-safe load unit, suitable for forklifts and lift trucks.

Most IBC containers basically consist of a plastics, wooden or metal pallet with a plastic tank (called inner tank or inner bottle) and an iron-barred box or a tube frame. Depending on the type, an IBC container holds 500 to max. 3000 liters.

IBC containers are approved for the transport of dangerous goods.

The stacking capability for the transport of dangerous goods depends on the type of IBC container and has to be indicated.

Transports of dangerous goods are threats to public security and order and to the lifes and health of people and animals. Legal provisions apply on the transport of dangerous goods.

Please see the following individual regulations for closer information:

  • The Eureopean Agreement concerning the international Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (abbreviated ADR).
  • The Convention concerning international Carriage by Rail (abbreviated COTIF).
  • IMDG code (International Maritime Code for Dangerous Goods)
-> Hazard designation for dangerous goods in maritime transport

Products for load securing of IBC containers

Grönheit & Weigel recommends the following auxiliary means for the load securing of IBC containers:

Dunnage bags for load securing

Load gaps are filled with dunnage bags. The dunnage bag is filled with air and holds the cargo in its place. Grönheit & Weigel offers dunnage bags in different sizes, qualities and with different valves.

Lashings

Grönheit & Weigel offers the cost-effective alternative to steel strappings in different types, widths and strengths.

Container-lashings und container tarpaulins

Container-lashings and container tarpaulins are pre-assembled restraint systems for the easy and fast load securing inside of containers. Grönheit & Weigel offers container-lashings for oversea and high-cube containers. The horizontal lashings of the types N1, N2 and N7 are tightly sewed to the vertical lashings, being designed for oversea containers. The horizontal lashings of types N3, N4, N5, N6, N8 and N10 can be adjusted in height against the vertical lashings. Of the listed products, the types N4 and N6 are suited for high-cube containers.

Positioning aids for dunnage bags

Grönheit & Weigel offers EasyCoins and hook and loop coins to position dunnage bags in hard-to-reach places.

Corner protection brackets for the point load distribution on the IBC

Grönheit & Weigel recommends cardboard corner protectors to protect the IBC frames against damage. We recommend cardboard corner protectors with a point load capacity of 600daN.

HSS container seal klicker

For overseas transports, the use of high security seals is prescribed by law. HSS container seals protect container doors from unauthorised access and are approved for US and British customs. Note: For the effective protection from unauthorized access or manipulation attempts, one HSS klicker seal for each container door is needed. All HSS container seals correspond to ISO 17712:2013 for overseas transports.

Protection from theft

High-quality anti-theft devices protect for example containers, trailers and swap bodies against unauthorised accesses. Grönheit & Weigel offers different anti-theft devices for trailers, semitrailers and container doors.

Anti-slip materials

Anti-slip mats and pads prevent the goods from getting out of place during transport. All anti-slip materials of Grönheit & Weigel are certified and increase the coefficient of sliding friction to µ 0,6, thus decreasing the number of strapping materials needed.

Desiccatives for containers

Protect your goods in a container against humidity. Grönheit & Weigel recommends the desiccative Dry and desiccant bags. The impermeable film of the desiccative Dry allows placing the desiccative directly on the goods to protect.

Two-piece lashing straps for load securing of IBC containers

For the application of different lashing methods (e.g. head loop lashing), different types of ratchets have to be used. The two-piece lashing belts of Grönheit & Weigel are available in the following versions:

  • Pressure ratchet with a pre-stressing force of 300 daN and LC/BL 2.500/5.000 daN
  • Long lever ratchet with a pre-stressing force of 500 daN and LC/BL 2.500/5.000 daN
each in 8 and 10 m.
